The Story of Anne With An E
Anne with an E (also known as Anne in Canada) is a Canadian television series based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s famous children’s book Anne of Green Gables, which was originally published in 1908. It was created for CBC by Moira Walley-Beckett.
On March 19, 2017, the series debuted on CBC, followed by a worldwide release on Netflix on May 12. It was extended for a third season in August 2018 after being renewed for a second season in August 2017. CBC and Netflix cancelled the series soon after the third season was released in 2019.
What’s the Story Behind Anne With An E?
In 1896, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, an older brother and sister who have never married and live together, decide to adopt an orphan kid to help out around their family home of Green Gables, in the borders of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. When Matthew goes to the railway station to pick up the kid, he instead encounters Anne Shirley, a 13-year-old girl who is creative, intelligent, high-spirited, and chatty. When Anne’s parents died when she was a few months old, she was orphaned and worked as a servant for a number of households before being put in an orphanage.
Marilla is suspicious of Anne, despite Matthew’s wish for her to remain, because of her position as an unknown orphan and the apparent inutility of a young girl. When Marilla is unable to find a brooch, she assumes Anne is a thief, which confirms her suspicions. By sending her away, the Cuthberts “return” her to the orphanage. She returns to the orphanage, but she is frightened to enter because of the bullying she suffered there, so she goes to the train station instead.
